Progress September 26

I thought it would have been completed months ago
I guess I needed to step away from it for a few weeks
Anyway here it is
I am finally feeling like it is coming together

Progress July 7

I'm taking a bit of a break from the serious stuff and working on my entry for this years gamblin artist color torrit gray competition
This year I only have the time to paint one picture. This picture will be painted using all gamblin products.
I hope the judges like horses

Progress June 23

So much stuff is going on that it's difficult to concentrate today. Here is Silver Heels in progress. It is a small 11 x 14 on canvas. I will hit it again after it dries and hopefully the next session will finish it. I am switching back to the action pictures tomorrow.

Progress June 17

I am enjoying painting this picture so much that I started another, similar one. The next several paintings are going to focus on capturing the feeling of motion. My goal will be to depict accurate physical detail, while also capturing motion and gesture. Well, that's the goal. I have a couple of ideas for the next three pictures or so, and then hopefully back to narrative historical work by the end of September.

Progress June 16

I started this small picture today. This week I am finalizing my plans for paintings and show entries for the rest of the summer. It's time to start thinking about a Christmas/holiday card, and it's been a while since I had a promotional postcard made. So many things to work on when I'd rather just paint.

Progress June 15

I got to get back to this picture that was started last week. With this series, I am trying to paint looser and with brighter colors. I seem to start out that way, but as I work I find myself reverting to my old ways. I am enjoying the process however and the results.

Progress June 13

This is the first shot of a picture I started last week. I am working in a more direct style, hoping to have more spontaneity in my approach. Sunday will be a day of rest for this picture, I will be heading to the fairgrounds to shoot more reference and then to the farm for some long overdue chores. I plan on putting in the background on Monday.

Progress May 27

The progress is happening more slowly these days between broken pickup trucks and garden tractors and pictures that don't want to come together for me
But it's all good

Progress may 23

This week I am working on a series of equine pictures that push the color intensity as much as I can.

Progress May 15

Here are some process photos of the picture I've been working on this month. It's a larger size than I'm used working on, four feet by two feet. I've been working on a series of pictures where I push the color intensity a bit. I could keep adjusting this one, but I think I'm going to start a new picture this week. I have a smaller canvas for a study. I  will post it next.

progress April 15

I'm back from visiting family in Pennsylvania and finally am getting back to picture making. Here is a view of one of the largest paintings I've attempted this year. It is 40" x 30."  I am going to work on values for another day before I start laying in the major color.

Progress march 30

I started the portrait of a team of draft horses on alkyd primed Belgian linen canvas, 40" x 30."
This is a big picture for me, time to get out all of the big brushes.

Progress march 23

Working on my Bigguns picture today. The painting process is taking longer than I anticipated. I want to get the detail right I guess. Not sure if I'm messing it up or improving it, but I do love their expressions and the emotion of the picture.

Progress March 19

I've been drawing a lot but have been forgetting to post them here. This one is from an internet photo. I am developing a series of Andalusians and Spanish equine pictures. I wish I knew some owners of some that were nearby.

Progress March 11

I finally made it back to Ohio. I am enjoying my time with the girls who are home on spring break. I hope to get back to my oils on Monday. Until then it's drawing at the kitchen table with everyone around.

Progress February 27

Yes I am still working on this picture. The process has become pretty time consuming, building layer upon layer. The personalities of this team are starting to come through. I wish I had gotten their names. Maybe they'll be back in Wooster this fall.

Progress February 26

It's hard to see the progress I am making from the strong lamp light in this picture. I hope to get a good shot of it soon. Today I spend time on the tack- making the over lapping straps make sense and painting the studs. I am struggling to paint these details and make them fit in without drawing too much attention. I don't want this pictures emphasis to be too much on the awesome tack. I have to work this out soon, as each layer of paint must be thicker than the previous. I think I have one or two layers left at this point.

I'm not sure if you can see the progress I've made today but this picture is slowly getting there

Progress February 20

I felt like painting today this is a picture I put away about two weeks ago
I am realizing the importance of subtle value transitions with this one

Progress February 19

Working on full figure drawings today. Exploring ideas for my spring collection of paintings.

Progress February 18

Here's the latest version of the draft horse portrait
I am trying to resolve the light values on the front of his face
Lightening them and bringing his muzzle forward without making them chalky
